Grapevine-Colleyville votes on interim legal services after Jackson Walker resigns
The Grapevine-Colleyville school board voted 5-2 to expand Walsh Gallegos, an Irving based firm’s role as general counsel and Leasor Crass, LLC until the board hires a replacement.
The switch from the legal counsel of Tim Davis and his firm Jackson Walker LLP to another law firm, comes after Jackson Walker resigned at the previous board meeting, according to former board president Shannon Braun.
Braun and trustee Kathy Florence Spradley voted against the change.
The board meeting’s agenda state that unlike Walsh Gallegos, Leasor Crass is not a Texas Association of Schools Board approved and the district’s legal liability coverage is provided by the TASB risk management fund.
During the board meeting Begin said the board isn’t limited to using a TASB approved law firm. The agenda documents state that the district’s defense services are covered by TASB when a district uses an approved firm.
The district is currently using Walsh Gallegos, for legal issues regarding education and Leasor Crass as a general counsel.
“It’s no different than what’s been done in the past,” Braun said. “And I don’t really care what firm that y’all choose to use. I’m curious as to know what Walsh Gallegos rate is, just working with them the past few months, they bring two attorneys to almost every meeting, which will rack-up costs pretty quickly.”
Braun said that she would like to know the timeline for hiring a new firm to replace Jackson Walker.
Spradley said that TASB is a great resource, but added that she believes it dangerous for the board to only use TASB.
Begin said there will be an opportunity to continue to discuss which law firms the board should consider especially with the new hiring of Jason Adams as the district’s new superintendent.
“This is again an interim measure to be able to proceed efficiently and quickly,” Begin said.
Until a law firm is hired board members will go through the superintendent, board president or the board’s designee when they need to get legal advice or information from the district’s legal counsel, according to the documents.
Tim Davis and Jackson Walker filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Ken Paxton in a Travis County District Court in July 2025 on behalf of GCISD to block the release of open records showing unredacted invoices from Jackson Walker after Paxton ruled that the districts need to release the records.
Trustee Lindsey Sheguit asked if the board had received client files from Tim Davis and the unredacted invoices for the board to look at.
Begin said that Jackson Walker is working “feverously” on it and expects the board to receive them soon.
