Bedford is renovating and enlarging the city’s animal shelter to provide more space for animals and staff, and plenty of meet-and-greet rooms for people who want to adopt pets.

The work will start June 1, and construction is expected to last a year. The shelter was built in 1990.

While work is underway, Euless is stepping in to house the animals from Bedford’s shelter.

Molly Fox, a spokesperson for the city, said funds for the project are from certificates of obligation issued in 2023 and the city’s general fund.

The shelter will increase from 4,900 to 7,500 square feet.

Other improvements include a new lobby and front facade, meet-and-greet rooms, covered patios and exterior kennels, and perimeter fencing.

What’s next

Starting May 22, residents may visit the Euless Animal Shelter at 201 W. Euless Blvd. to view adoptable Bedford (and Euless) animals, drop off donations, or register their pet. Residents looking to surrender an animal or who have found a stray should plan to bring them to the Euless Animal Shelter beginning Friday.

Animal control response, along with field services and emergency calls in Bedford, will continue as normal throughout construction. Staff will be based at both the Euless Animal Shelter and the Bedford Police Department, and the Bedford Animal Shelter’s main phone number 817-952-2191 will remain throughout the project.
