Bicyclist killed by hit-and-run driver in Haltom City
A bicyclist riding on the shoulder of East Belknap Street was fatally struck early Thursday by an SUV that drove away, dragging the bicycle, police reported.
A 911 call about the hit-and-run in the 5600 block of East Belknap Street was logged at 4:12 a.m.
Witnesses told police that the SUV driver stopped after hitting the bicyclist and got out, but then got back under the wheel and drove away.
Patrol officers spotted the SUV about a mile west of the scene, which was near where Belknap splits into U.S. 377 and Texas 183.
Officers arrested the 21-year-old driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, said Detective Ray Beshirs, a Haltom City police spokesman. She was in the North Richland Hills Jail Thursday night and faces an intoxication manslaughter charge, Beshirs said. He declined to identify her.
The bicyclist had not been identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office by late Thursday.
