City of Colleyville contemplating community garden

In response to interest from citizens, the City Council is considering construction of a community garden, and they’re asking for input from citizens to gauge the level of potential participation.

To garner that input, the city is conducting an online survey from Aug. 15 through Sept. 20. The survey will be accessible from the homepage of Colleyville.com.

Community gardens have been around since the late 1800s and became widely popular in the U.S. during World War II, when they were called victory gardens.

Cities began installing community gardens in the late 1990s; some of these communal gardens have thrived over the years, while the interest in other gardens has waned.

In a presentation to the City Council this spring, staff provided a scenario to establish a community garden in Colleyville. Specifics include:

▪ Number of plots: 33

▪ Plot size: 20-foot by 4 feet

▪ Material for plot construction: wood

▪ Water source: city tap water

▪ Cost to adopt a plot: $30

▪ Work/project days: monthly

The cost is estimated at $2,500-5,000 to install water system capable of providing the ability for gardening participants to hand water each plot

The entire presentation will be available online for residents to view before taking the community garden survey. For more information, call 817-503-1182 or email jhubbard@colleyville.com.
