Dragon standouts juggle recruiting with start of season

Carroll football began preparations for the 2015 season on Monday. That meant recruiting for the top 2016 and 2017 recruits took a break. The first week of fall camp means meetings, meetings and more meetings.

The good news for these recruits is that the college programs they are interested in are also in the beginning stages of their fall camp schedules. But this is also a pretty good time to get an idea where everything stands for these prospects.

Zach Farrar, WR (2016): In late June, Farrar hoped to be in a position to name a top five before camp started. That has changed. He said he’s going to wait until probably the middle of this season. While he doesn’t have any offers, he said USC, UCLA, Texas, Texas A&M and Alabama have told him they want him to send the film through Carroll’s first three games for further evaluation. Of course, he’s hoping that will prompt one or more of those to offer. Farrar already holds 18 offers. Of those, six are from Power Five conference schools, including Washington, Boston College, Texas Tech, Iowa, Illinois and Purdue.

“I’m pushing it back a little longer,” Farrar said. “Those schools want to see my improvement from last year since that was really my first year to play wide receiver. But I definitely hope to have my top five in October.”

That would be followed by official visits. Farrar is hoping that he can take a couple during the season before going on others after the season.

Robert Barnes, S (2017): The latest school to show some serious attention toward Barnes is Texas A&M. He said the Aggies have not offered yet but want him to visit. Barnes said he is considering visiting for A&M’s first home game of the year, Sept. 5 against Arizona State.

Barnes had hoped to visit Baylor this past weekend. However, family conflicts prevented him from making the trip to Waco. He said he hopes to attend Baylor’s home opener on Sept. 12 when the Bears play host to Lamar.

“I’ve also been receiving some interest from Ohio State,” he said. “But they are probably going to wait to see if I can get to a game. They want me to get in front of the coaches. I’d said my early leaders are Baylor, Oklahoma, Alabama and Texas. I’m not committing yet. It’s definitely been a crazy time. But it’s also just a blessing.”

Obi Eboh, DB (2016): There are 29 offers that Eboh holds. He had talked as recently as early July about wanting to make a commitment decision before the 2015 season started. It remains unclear if he will do that. A few schools seems to be making their way more and more into this thinking. That includes Arkansas, Duke, Oklahoma and California.

Lil’Jordan Humphrey, RB (2016): While he’s probably going to go down as the best running back in Carroll history, he’s not going to be playing that position in college. At 6-5, programs have other ideas, such as halfback or wide receiver. Humphrey said he’s not ready to name a list of finalists. He is still discussing that with his mother.

However, three schools appear to have caught his interest: Texas, California and Wisconsin. Humphrey visited all three over the summer and plans to attend Wisconsin’s season opener Sept. 5 at AT&T Stadium against Alabama. There are no official visits set.
