NTA brings home six medals from national competition

NTA Taekwondo of Colleyville had a phenomenal showing at the USA Taewondo National Championships recently, where it captured six medals, including one gold, three silver and two bronze.

The competition, which was held in Austin from July 5-10, featured more than 3,000 competitors from all over the United States.

The Colleyville Taekwondo center sent 14 competitors ranging in age from nine to 46 years to compete, including Allen Boisjollie, Alexis Jackson, William Jackson, Jessica Neal, Matthew Pafford, Kyle Valdez, Lauren Butler, Stephanie Cook, Kendra Jackson, Elizabeth Nemirovski, Max Pafford, Cassie Neal, Sam Jackson and Mark Taylor; lead by coach and head instructor Master Jonathan Hardwick.

Max Pafford was the group's gold medal winner in the 12-14 Male black belt competition (bantam weight), which is his third national championship, and his first as a black belt.

Hardwick is a fourth degree black belt, five-time U.S National Champion and a former U.S. Junior National team member.

Competitors from NTA Colleyville trained six days a week to prepare for the tournament.

According to a news release, “Taekwondo is fast-paced striking sport that involves kicking and punching an opponent’s target areas for points. Electronic sensors measure the power of punches and kicks to award competitors for strikes to the head and body. Taekwondo is the world’s most practiced martial art, as well as an Olympic sport.”

Grapevine volleyball set to open season

The Grapevine volleyball team will open the season with its first scrimmage at 3 p.m. on Friday against Northwest at Northwest High School.

The Lady Mustangs will open the regular season at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 at Hebron High School.

Grapevine won a district championship and advanced to the regional quarterfinals.

It's first tournament of the season will be begin on Aug. 13 at Pearland.

Carroll prepares for season opener

The Carroll volleyball team will open up its regular season at 6 p.m. on Aug. 10 at Richardson High School.

The Lady Dragons finished second in district last season behind Colleyville Heritage and advanced to the regional semifinals.

Carroll will also be competing in the Pearland Tournament.

Colleyville Heritage will open with morning game

The Colleyville Heritage volleyball team will open the season at 9 a.m. Friday at Friso Centennial.

The Lady Panthers went undefeated in district last season to win a district championship and advanced to the regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Panthers will also be competing in the Pearland tournament.
