Work begins on Kimball Park in Southlake

SOUTHLAKE Work has begun on a new mixed-use development in Southlake that will feature the city’s second hotel.

Kimball Park, a 15.5-acre piece of land at the northwest corner of Texas 114 and Kimball Avenue, is the future site of a Cambria Hotel, office space, retail space and restaurants.

At a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, Jeff Medici, managing partner for Medici Development Partners, the developer, said that several years ago, he “felt we needed another hotel option.”

“The Hilton is great, but I thought Southlake was lacking in other hotels,” he said.

Three years ago, Medici said he quit his vice president’s job at Fidelity Investments because he wanted to spend more time with his family and started MDP, and his first project was finding a site for a new hotel.

Southlake Mayor Laura Hill said the Cambria, an upscale and modern part of the Choice Hotel chain, is a “different type of hotel,” adding that it’ll be in a good location with a close proximity to the airport, Southlake Town Square and other activities in town.

“We are very excited about this project,” Hill said.

The Cambria is projected to be finished by the end of July 2016, and a couple of restaurants are expected to be finished about the same time. The office building will come around the end of next year, Medici said.
