A principal in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district who faces a federal charge of enticing a minor resigned Monday, the district announced.

Oscar Figueroa, 46, had been on administrative leave from Viridian Elementary School since he was arrested July 7 by Frisco police. He was accused of agreeing to meet someone at Stonebriar Centre mall who he thought was a juvenile but who was actually an undercover detective.

Figueroa was released on bond the next day, but was arrested Friday by special agents from Homeland Security, officials said.

Frisco police said Monday that they will not pursue a state charge, leaving the case to federal authorities.

The school district plans to continue an internal investigation, according to the release.

Figueroa made his first appearance in federal court Monday morning in Plano. A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

The maximum sentence for enticement of a minor is life in federal prison.

Figueroa’s attorney, Bruce Anton, estimated that about 40 people have written letters to show support for him, according to WFAA.com.

Aungelique Brading has been appointed principal at Viridian. She has been principal of Stonegate Elementary School for the past four years and has been employed by the district since 2002.

The school is in the Viridian master-planned community in north Arlington, which is in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district. Arlington police have said that they were not involved in the investigation.
