Carroll, Heritage complete trip to 7-on-7 state tourney

Texas high school football’s mid-summer extravaganza – the state 7-on-7 tournament – went through another successful run this past weekend at Veterans Park in College Station.

Carroll and Colleyville Heritage participated. It didn’t go quite as expected, as none of the three advanced to the Division I championship bracket. Both teams played in the consolation bracket on Saturday and were eliminated by the second round.

This also isn’t a precursor as to how the upcoming 2015 season is going to unfold. The important factor is that quarterbacks and wide receivers continued to get reps in a competitive environment.

Carroll Dragons

Pool J Results: L to Round Rock McNeil, 44-40; L to Dickinson, 26-19; L to Abilene, 32-18

Consolation bracket: L to Cy Falls, 52-25

Final record: 0-4

Analysis: Last week, we mentioned we believed Carroll would be the favorite in this pool. That was far from the case. And there was a good reason for that. Neither defensive back Obi Eboh (attending The Opening in Beaverton, Ore.), wide receiver Zach Farrar nor running back Lil’Jordan Humphrey were on the roster for the sake of keeping them away from injury. Still, the McNeil loss may have set the tone as Carroll wound up without a win in the pool and immediately went into the consolation bracket. Cy Falls jumped on the Dragons. Cy Falls advanced all the way to the consolation finals before it lost to Lufkin, 39-32.

Reality check: This wasn’t a true version of the Dragons, so not much can be taken from the outcome. What Carroll hopes will happen is that when fall workouts begin on Aug. 10, quarterback Montana Murphy (back) will be able to go. Still, the QB race could be interesting between him and Mason Holmes.

Colleyville Heritage Panthers

Pool O Results: L to FW All Saints, 46-26; L to The Woodlands, 33-25; D Richmond George Ranch, 25-21.

Consolation bracket: L to El Paso Montwood, 26-12

Final record: 1-3

Analysis: For a program that’s transitioning to new head coach Joe Willis’ offense, it really didn’t turn out to be a bad performance. Keep in mind, Willis was named the new head coach in late May (after spring workouts) and really has not had an opportunity to implement anything except what the quarterbacks and receivers are doing on their own time. Colleyville Heritage did not take a running back to the event. Jamarie Williams didn’t go. Both senior Jacob Sheppard and junior Cam Roane split time working with the offense.

Reality check: It’s likely that several players may have solidified their spots on the field for the upcoming season. Fall camp should open with Sheppard and Roane competing for the starting QB spot. Time will tell how and when that is determined.
