Two family members believed to be mother and son died Sunday morning after a fire started in one of the bedrooms at their home in Haltom City.

Deputy fire chief Charles Napp said Tuesday afternoon that the man was pronounced dead after firefighters pulled him from the home, and the woman was flown to Parkland Memorial Hospital where she also died Sunday morning.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has identified the man as Alejandro Lopez Navarro, 56, and the cause of death is pending. The woman was taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office, and she has not been identified.

Napp said firefighters arrived to heavy smoke at the home in the 3200 block of Rita Lane shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, and flames were spilling out of a bedroom window, but the fire didn’t spread to other parts of the home.

Neighbors said Navarro came outside knocking on doors asking for help and went back inside to rescue the woman, believed to be his mother, Napp said.

A neighbor called 911.

Firefighters went to the bedroom where they got the woman out. They found the man in another room, Napp said.

“It was just a bad deal. We’re confident the fire started in one bedroom. There was smoke everywhere else,” Napp said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
