Two more children die after being pulled from Irving pool
Two young brothers and a sister, none of whom knew how to swim, have died after they were pulled from an Irving apartment complex swimming pool last week, police said Monday.
The two brothers, Treshawn Smith, 9, and Anthony Smith, 11, died at 9:15 p.m. Sunday at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, police said. Their 10-year-old sister, August Smith, died Wednesday, the day of the incident.
Police are investigating the drownings as an accident.
“However, if the facts and circumstances support that a crime has occurred, the case will be referred to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office,” said Det. James McLellan in a Monday news release.
The mother was with her children and two other younger children who did not know how to swim, police said.
Police responded to the drowning call about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Oak Villas Apartments in the 2300 block of North MacArthur Boulevard.
Detectives determined that the children’s mother had taken her five children to the pool. The two youngest kids are 3 and 6 years old, McLellan said.
“As the mother was preoccupied with the two younger children, the three older children went underwater,” McLellan said. “An apartment maintenance man and others responded to the mother’s cry for help and began the rescue effort.”
When they arrived, police and firefighters found two of the children were receiving cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
“As officers and paramedics took over, they were told a third child was still in the pool,” McLellan said. “Irving Fire Department personnel pulled the child from the pool and began CPR.”
Later that day, August Smith died, and Treshawn and Anthony were placed on life support, police said.
Detectives are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the family in the water to call Irving police at 972-273-1010.
