Combine lets high school golfers show skills to colleges
Finding the right college at which to play golf could be as easy as entering the U.S. Golf Combine at Texas Star on July 1-2. High school golfers will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in driving, putting, pitching, sand play and playing nine holes.
“They are given a score in each of these areas that the college coaches are able to look at an assess,” said Texas Star head professional Dan Walden.
“This combine is geared toward those players that are interested more in junior colleges and second-tier university programs. We want to help assist those kids and parents that currently are not scholarship [level] but that might still have potential in the future, or that just want an opportunity to play college golf.”
U.S. Golf Combines was started by professional Andy Walker and Darren Horrell as a response to the competitiveness of college recruiting and the limited amount of information available to college coaches. Walker is the coach of defending National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national champion South Mountain Community College and is a former NJCAA All-American.
Much like a football combine, this event allows young golfers the opportunity to impress college scouts. Players can even see how their scores would stack up in a variety of competitive levels from NJCAA to the NCAA. They’ll also receive a college-ready golf resume.
“This combine is not really for the best players who are already heading to a tier one university program such as TCU or Oklahoma,” Walden said of the Texas Star event. “Although those kids are welcome as well.”
