After almost 30 years in the fire service, chief Haltom City fire chief Perry Bynum is retiring Jan. 2.

Bynum, 56, said he wants to devote more time to his family. He has two children and three grandchildren.

City manager Keith Lane said he is conducting an internal search to replace Bynum.

“Chief Bynum is a true example of a selfless public servant, and his presence and leadership will be sorely missed, not only within the fire department, but our entire community as well,” Lane said in a news release.

Bynum began his firefighting career in Haltom City in 1989, and held several positions. As emergency management coordinator, he established Haltom City’s emergency management program. He was also instrumental in starting the Haltom City Community Emergency Response Team. He was named fire chief in June 2017.

Bynum credited the hard work of firefighters for his department’s accomplishments. The department is building a third fire station and replacing two engines.

Bynum, who lives in Euless, served on the Euless City Council from 2007 to 2018.
