Northeast Tarrant

Cops said he was trying to con his way into homes. Turns out, he was doing his job.

A man police originally said was posing as a home security employee to try and enter homes in Grapevine actually does work for the company and was just trying to make sales.

Residents of two homes told police they thought the man, who was wearing a blue t-shirt bearing the ADT company logo, was lying about where he worked. One homeowner told police he thought the man was trying to get his security codes.

One woman who let the man into her house took photos of him and sent them to police. Grapevine police posted a photo of the man on their Facebook at 9:30 a.m., warning people to be on the lookout for “people posing as ADT company representatives who try to get into your home.”

At 3 p.m., police spokeswoman Amanda McNew said via email the man actually is an employee with a company selling ADT.

“The ‘suspect’ in this story is not a suspect,” McNew said. “He was working for a company that sells ADT systems. It was his first day on the job and he may have made some missteps on how he was trying to do sale. So, no crime.”

At about 3:05 p.m., Grapevine police updated their Facebook post.

“We have been in contact with ADT, and can tell you that the man pictured was in fact working to sell ADT systems for a secondary company,” the post said. “We still appreciate our citizens for proactively questioning behavior they found suspicious.”
