The Grapevine girls basketball team advanced to the regional quarterfinals this season, and a big part of the reason why was the play of Abby Sandy.
The junior shooting guard was a first team all-district selection who helped lead the Lady Mustangs to a 32-3 overall record and 12-0 mark in district competition.
Coach Lindy Lombard said that Sandy contributes a lot to the Grapevine squad and said, as one of two returning players from this year's team, she will have an even bigger role next season.
“Going into her senior year, Abby will bring in three years of varsity experience,” Lombard said. “She's a tremendous student, heavily involved in her community outside of school and has been a great leader for us now that we are in our off season and with our underclassmen.

“She is a fantastic shooter. She spends a lot of times on her shots. Near the end of the season, we had two of our point guards go down with injuries, and she took on the role of ball handler. So she has spent a lot of time working on her ball handling skills.”
Lombard said she will rely heavily on Sandy for leadership this coming season.
“She and Tatum Tellin, our sophomore guard, are our only two returning starters from this year's team,” Lombard said. “So, while she played a vital role last year, this year, our dynamics are going to look very different, and we are going to rely on her, since we have a lot of young players coming into the program next year.”
Sandy said that she is very pleased with what her team was able to accomplish this season and said that she tries to bring a couple of things to the team.
“I just want to be the best player that I can be and have the ability to influence my teammates,” Sandy said. “I just want to be a really good role model, and I think that is a good way to play the game of basketball is to try to get your teammates to play the best they can.
“This was the most incredible season I've ever had. We had a great coaching staff and and a great team and we just put it all in. We overcame adversity, and I think I'm most proud of that.”
Sandy said she does have some definite goals for the coming season.
“It will be a totally new and different team, and I think that will be a bit of a challenge,” Sandy said. “We've accepted that, and we're going to built off of our new strengths ... I'm hoping we can get past the second round of the playoffs, same as last season. I think that would be a pretty reasonable goal for us.”
Lombard said that she believes that Sandy will work on a couple of areas of her game this off season, and said she would not be a bit surprised if she has already begun doing so.
“She's probably already doing it, but I think that even though she is an excellent shooter, I think she's been working on her mid range game, off the dribble, pull up jumpers,” Lombard said. “I think she'll continue to work on her defense and ball handling skills as well.”
