Police have identified a man who was shot to death last week by an officer as a Baytown resident.

Authorities have provided few details of the shooting but said the man, Victor Reyes Jr, 30, was shot after he appeared to reach for a weapon.

Harris County court records show Reyes was charged with drug possession and evading arrest in 2017. Online records also indicate Reyes has been arrested for theft, driving while license invalid, speeding and other traffic violations.

Officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle about 4:30 a.m. Jan. 16 in the parking lot of Albertsons, 1300 Airport Freeway.

When officers arrived, the vehicle drove away. Police located that vehicle in the 600 block of Hurst Drive.

At some point, as officers made contact, the man reportedly reached for a weapon, police said. That's when an officer opened fire.

A resident in the area told the Star-Telegram he heard at least three shots.

Officers administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the man died at the scene.

The Texas Rangers are investigating. No information was released about the officer involved in the shooting.
