Dragons fall to Flower Mound in area round marathon
The Carroll boys soccer team came up short in its bid for a trip to the regional quarterfinals on Friday night, losing in a shoot-out to Flower Mound in the area round game at Keller High School.
The Dragons wrapped up the season with a 11-9-5 overall record, and coach Greg Oglesby said that his team gave a good effort in the game against the Jaguars.
“It was a great game,” Oglesby said. “It was 0-0 at the end of regulation.”
Apparently, both teams decided to save each of their goals for the second overtime period, as the game was fought tooth and nail until the very end.
“They scored in the second overtime, and we equalized about two minutes later,” Oglesby said. “The kids played fantastic.”
Carroll ended up losing the game on penalty kicks to the Jaguars, who will go on to face Duncanville in the regional quarterfinals.
The Dragons finished third overall in the district standings and went 4-1-1 in their final six games of the district season to claim a spot in the playoffs.
Oglesby said that when he reflects on the season as a whole, he is pretty pleased with what his team accomplished, and added that his players dealt with a lot of adversity this year.
“It was a great season,” Oglesby said. “The boys really came together the last three weeks. They were good.”
Carroll finished up the regular season with a 7-4-1 record overall in district standings and were six points ahead of fourth-place Haltom.
The Dragons defeated South Grand Prairie 1-0 in the first round of the playoffs to advance to area round.
Oglesby said he is pleased with how the season unfolded and said that he believes that his team is in very good shape to have another good season in 2016.
“It's been a good season,” Oglesby said. “We have a good corps group of 12 returning players.”
The Carroll defense posted six district shutouts this season and placed the only blemish on top ranked Coppell's otherwise flawless record with a 1-1 draw on Feb. 25 against the Cowboys.
Coppell won every other game in the district schedule this school year.
