A Haltom City boy, 9, is dead after playing with a gun and shooting himself , police said
A 9-year-old boy died Saturday after the gun he was playing with fired accidentally, according to police.
Police responded to a shooting call about 3:20 p.m. in the 3500 block of Parker Road East and saw a woman crying hysterically and waving the officers down.
Once police got inside the residence they saw the boy, identified as Jonathan Reed by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, in the master bedroom suffering from a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Haltom City Police Department.
A drawer to the nightstand was open and a semi-automatic handgun was on the floor next to the Reed, the release said. Haltom City Fire Department and MedStar personnel who came to treat Reed pronounced him dead at the scene.
Reed was taken to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office for their investigation. Police said they believe Reed found the gun in the nightstand and was playing with the gun when it went off, the release said.
Haltom City police continue to investigate. When the investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office for review and that office will make a determination on whether charges will be pursued.
