GCISD Special Olympics features nine districts

Grapevine-Colleyville school district hosted its 20th annual Special Olympics Mustang-Panthers Relays on March 23.

Ninety GCISD students, along with students from eight other school districts, participated in different track events, such as the 100-meter dash, shot put and the long jump.

The day also featured assisted walks/run, wheelchair events and a mini javelin throw.

“The Special Olympics event is about bringing together the entire district and community for one special day of celebrating achievement,” said Leslie Low, GCISD adaptive PE teacher and originator of the Mustang-Panther Relays event. “Participation in Special Olympics allows our students with special needs not only the chance to develop sports skills, but also provides them with social skills necessary to be a vibrant, contributing part of the community.”

The Mustang-Panther Relays brings the entire district together with more than 400 GCISD secondary students providing assistance throughout the day.

PALS, Student Leadership, Best Buddies and the varsity football teams from GCISD middle and high schools were on hand to support the Special Olympics athletes and to help the event run smoothly.
