Lady Trojans knocked out of playoffs but pleased with season
Girls soccer at Trinity ended short in the playoffs, but coach Kurt Clawson is happy about the way his team competed and looking forward to next year.
The Lady Trojans finished 9-9-1 overall, 4-6-1 in district and earned the fourth and final playoff seed in District 7-6A. They lost to Midlothian in the bi-district round Friday night.
“The season went about expected and hoped for. We competed with Colleyville Heritage for third, competed with L.D. Bell for fourth and that's what ended up happening,” Clawson said.
Trinity had to cancel some games this season due to weather, but still got some key wins. They tied Colleyville in their second meeting.
“Tying Colleyville in the second round in district meant we didn't have to beat Bell. We couldn't lose, which made life easier,” Clawson said.
The Lady Trojans also went to Arlington in the beginning of the year for a tournament at Arlington High and went 3-0, just one of the few times the team has done that in numerous Arlington tournaments in Clawson's 14 years as head coach.
“We started off good, got our confidence right away,” Clawson said. “We started off 5-0, made the playoffs with a small team. The girls were excited.”
“We had a lot of inexperience, but I'm happy on where we finished. I'm happy we stayed as healthy as we did. A good crowd came to watch them against Bell and Midlothian – girls were excited for people to watch them.”
Trinity will lose six seniors, three of which have been playing varsity all four years in Katie Pullano, Meghan Mulrennan and Valeria Hinojosa.
Despite losing this much, Clawson is looking forward to the girls competing for spots and playing time next season.
“We lose a great group of seniors, but I look forward to the girls fighting for time, fighting for varsity spots,” he said. “There's jobs to be won – it makes the whole team better.”
Anna Flobeck led the team with 17 goals, 14 in district play. She added eight assists while Joy Reyes had a team-high 10 assists. She added nine goals, five of which came during district.
Nikki Southivong scored eight goals, Madden Mengwasser contributed five goals (four district goals) and five assists, and Brooke Bohannon recorded eight shutouts as goalkeeper with four coming in district play.
