Colleyville enforcement leads to drop in accidents

Texas 26 not only is one of Colleyville’s main roadways, it’s also home to the most roadway accidents.

Police Chief Mike Holder broke down some accident statistics from 2009-2014 at a recent City Council meeting.

Texas 26/Colleyville Boulevard saw 523 vehicle collisions from 2009-2014. Glade Road came in second with 192 and Cheek-Sparger Road was next with 129.

In 2014, there were 274 collisions, an increase from 209 in 2013. Holder said he believes construction and more distracted driving from mobile phone use are contributing factors.

“The increased road construction around the city certainly plays a role,” he said. “The increased cellphone activity, texting continues to be an issue.”

The areas that had the most collisions on Texas 26 include the 5600 block in between the Church Street and Hall-Johnson Road intersections; the 3800 block near the Cheek-Sparger intersection; and near the John McCain intersection.

Holder said most of the collisions were rear-end crashes.

Most of the accidents on Glade Road were at the Colleyville Boulevard intersection and at the 3900 block near the Heritage Avenue intersection.

Holder said the number of accidents from January and February of this year are down compared to the same period last year.

Holder attributed the decrease to an increase in targeted police enforcement in trouble spots in the city, especially along Colleyville Boulevard.

“We can help make a difference by doing some targeted enforcement along those areas,” he told the Council. “We have seen a few of them be effective.”

The discussion on collision was brought up at the request of Councilman Chuck Mogged, after he saw what actions were being taken to reduce the amount of certain types of crime in the city.

“I'd like to see what we can do drive these numbers down, too,” he said.
