Grapevine fire kicks off Loan a Life Jacket Program

Summer brings increased activity to North Texas lakes, and the Grapevine Fire Department, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, has put in place a pair of Loan a Life Jacket stations in an effort to prevent drowning accidents.

The program encourages Grapevine Lake visitors to borrow a life jacket from one of the two life jacket trees at Lakeview Park and Oak Grove Park. All jackets are to be returned before leaving the lake. The stations were put in place to honor the memory of James McKenzie, a Grapevine firefighter/paramedic and rescue diver who drowned at Grapevine Lake last summer while off duty.

Four additional trees are to be placed at various locations yet to be named around the lake this summer. For details call 817-410-8100 or 817-410-3000.

New playground equipment on the way in Bedford

Kids in Bedford are about to get upgraded playgrounds. Brand-new playground equipment is being installed at Stormie Jones and Harris Ryals parks, causing the city of Bedford to temporarily close the playgrounds. The city said that the construction will be completed and the playgrounds reopened by the end of the month, weather permitting. For updates, visit the city’s website, www.bedfordtx.gov.
