Trinity senior commits to Indiana Tech lacrosse
Sydney Davis is finishing up her final season with the Trinity lacrosse program, but for now, she knows what her future holds after signing with Indiana Tech.
One day, she just picked up some gear and knew the sport was for her.
“From the moment I held my very first lacrosse stick in the court yard of Harwood Junior High, I knew that this was the sport for me. Lacrosse is the fire that burns within me and pushes me to walk out onto the field with the mindset that I need to play even better than the last game,” Davis said.
Davis is the goalie for the Trojans in a sport that isn't UIL sanctioned, but rather a club sport. At Trinity, the team relies on coaches who devote their time out of love for the game. While at Trinity, Davis has had six different coaches.
“Each coach brought something special to the mix. Our first coach took Trinity to win state their first year, and three other coaches were part of that winning team,” she said.
Coming to the end of her high-school career, Davis was interested in playing in college. She got involved with many different recruiting websites and got an e-mail from Indiana Tech. Shortly after, she sent over footage, and Indiana Tech head coach John Belote suggested a campus visit.
“I choose Indiana Tech because as I was nearing the end of my college search I was thinking about what all the other colleges had to offer academics-wise and also sports-wise,” Davis said. “Indiana Tech not only had my academic interests, but also my sport as well. The moment I met the lacrosse team at Indiana Tech, I felt like I had been a part of the team already.”
Trinity plays varsity in Division II, and Davis has been the Trojans’ only goalie the past three years, but it didn’t start that way. While learning the position, she came to mean a lot to the team and even other parents.
“She is a great example of a team leader. Trinity fights very hard every year. Sydney didn't intend on playing goalie, he parents tell me that she came home one day with the gear and said she was asked to play that position,” said Don Hurt, a team parent. “As far as I know, Sydney is the first lacrosse player to sign a letter of intent at Trinity, boy or girl.”
As for Indiana Tech, the Warriors have high praise for Davis – especially from Belote.
“She has very good communication skills and is very vocal, which is key to a goalie as she controls the defense. She had great success at the high school level and I believe she will accept the challenge of playing at the college level where the dots are faster. Sydney is a good student and I see her developing as a leader at Indiana Tech,” Belote said.
“Sydney brings a very good work ethic to the program as well as excellent communication skills and ball-stopping ability. Her defense will be the beginning of our offense.
Davis said she thinks she’ll adapt well to collegiate lacrosse.
“Even though college-level lacrosse is far more competitive and aggressive, I feel that I will transition very well. I like to challenge myself, and I am always working to better my game as a goalie. With the help of the team and coaches at Indiana Tech, I will become the best player that I can be, and an asset to the Indiana Tech Warriors lacrosse team.”
