Trinity girls honor coach for her 1,100th career win
The number 11 proved to be a special one last week for the Euless Trinity girls basketball team. On the night the Lady Trojans improved to 11-0, they honored coach Sue Cannon for her 1,100th victory.
Trinity downed Home School Athletic Association in front of a home crowd that was told of Cannon’s milestone. Players surprised her following the game with a cake and a signed ball recognizing the accomplishment.
“It’s especially special because of this group of young ladies that I’m working with,” Cannon said. “These four senior returning starters, they’re responsible for a lot of those wins in their four years. That’s why it’s special, is because of the group that helped me achieve that 1,100. It’s not easy and it took a lot of hard work on their part. I’m grateful to them and I couldn’t have done it without them and their dedication.”
More than 700 of Cannon’s wins have come at Trinity. She’ll keep adding to that total this season, which has already seen the team add two pieces of hardware to its trophy case.
The Lady Trojans won the Eaton Tournament, dominating Fort Worth Dunbar 54-22 in the final on Nov. 12. A week later, Trinity beat all comers at the Flower Mound Tournament, where Cannon out-dueled her former assistant, Keller coach Doug Sporrer, in overtime for a 35-26 victory in the championship game.
Trinity, which is No. 4 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 6A state poll, also overcame two-time defending 4A state champion Argyle in the semifinals of the Flower Mound tournament.
“I’m definitely not surprised, with the talent we had coming back,” Cannon said of her team’s start to the season. “I definitely expected us to do well, so they’re living up to my expectations.”
Among those expectations is also that the team doesn’t rest on its laurels.
“They have played enough to know they have to work hard every single day and that everybody is going to be trying to beat us,” Cannon said.
The Trinity boys team also started the season strong, reeling off three straight victories before suffering a 77-75 loss to defending Oklahoma 6A state champion Putnam City West in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest at Duncanville.
The Trojans opened the season with wins over Arlington Lamar, Plano West and Keller Fossil Ridge.
“I really like our teamwork and our attitude,” coach Mark Villines said, noting that his team has scored more than 70 points in all four games. “From an offensive perspective and the pace we want to play at, we’re right on target.
“I think we’ve got to get a little better rebounding the ball because we’re just not very big. We’re going to have to grind it out.”
Trinity resumes its nondistrict slate at the San Angelo tournament this weekend.
