Carroll swim team, wrestlers do well at state meets
It was a big weekend for the Carroll athletics department last Friday and Saturday, as the swimming and diving teams and wrestling program competed in the state tournament with great results.
The Carroll boys swimming and diving team captured its sixth consecutive state championship on Saturday.
Carson Klein led the way for Carroll with two state championship victories, one in the 200 free (1:37.36) and the other in the 500 free (4:26.50).
The Carroll senior is planning to attend SMU or Hawaii next fall and said that being a part of this team this season and winning two gold medals at the state meet was very special for him.
“It feels better than I could have imagined,” Klein said. “I'm glad I could win those medals for my team. There's no better feeling than accomplishing your goals. Our team carried each other through the season and made it fun to be a Dragon swimmer. I couldn't ask for better teammates, and I couldn't have reached my goals without them.”
Nate Hernandez brought home a state championship for Carroll, as well, scoring 613.75 in the finals to take the top prize.
The Carroll girls finished fifth overall as a team at the state meet in swimming and diving, including a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay event featuring Nasha Luevit, Olivia Coffey, Anya Ittiruck and Ashley Baker, and the 200 freestyle relay with Casey Rose, Baker, Coffey and Jennifer Owston.
Hanson also finished seventh in the 200 freestyle, and Rose was seventh in the 100 freestyle.
The boys 200 medley relay of Kyle Derevyanik, Evan Kolde, William Karau and Griffin Rea finished fourth overall, and the boys and the 400 freestyle team of Carson Klein, Austin Whalen, John Everett and Jack LeVant took third place.
In wrestling action, the Dragons sent four wrestlers to the state meet with the following results:
113 pounds: Clay Vincent won his first match vs. Alonzo Herrera of Irving, then lost to Nick Capatillo of Corpus Christi King and lost again in consolations to Leo Burgos of Houston Cypress Ranch.
145: Trevor Price lost his first match to Kawika Crown from Klein Collins and then won in consolations, 5-1 against Brian Sauceda from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North, before losing to Avry Hermann from Amarillo Tascosa.
152: Baron Walsh lost his first match to Daniel Cartegena from Allen and then beat Adrian Escobedo from Houston Cypress Lakes by a 7-6 decision. Walsh then got beat by Alex Pankhurst of Austin Westlake.
160: Jack Duval, who won the Region II tournament in El Paso, and beat Chris Hammill from Lewisville in first round, won again vs. Bryan Brice of Houston Cypress Woods by major decision before losing his next two matches and finishing sixth overall at state.
Coach Joe Hathaway said he was pleased with his team's effort at the state tournament.
“I'm very proud of all four of our boys that competed this weekend,” Hathaway said. “They all won matches at the state meet and that isn't an easy thing to accomplish. Jack performed very well and was within seconds of being a finalist. He lost a couple very tough matches that could have easily gone either way against the best competition in the state.
“I have no doubt he will be in the mix for a state title in 2016. I'm very proud of our other three wrestlers. They all completed their goals of becoming state qualifiers.”
