Colleyville seeks applicants for Fire Academy

Colleyville’s Fire Department seeks applicants for its Citizens Fire Academy.

The free classes are weekly on Thursdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. beginning March 26 through May 7.

Participants will learn more about fire fighting in Colleyville through interactive lessons including a look at the fire stations, fire safety basics, fire scene operations, EMS and medical operations and more.

“If you’ve ever wondered about being a firefighter or what it takes, this is for you,” firefighter/paramedic William Savage said.

Savage who runs the program said students will get both classroom and hands on instruction including climbing ladders for firetrucks, dressing in fire fighter uniform and more.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and Colleyville residents have priority for the class that seats about 20. Savage said he has seen students as young as 18 and as old as 70. He said the only requirement is that students have “an eagerness to learn.”

Those interested can fill out a form at the city’s website at colleyville.com.

Students complete the academy can join the Colleyville Citizens Fire Academy Alumni Association, which helps man the rehab truck during large events. There firefighters can get refreshed and recharged with the help of citizens.
