Residents can apply now for help during Hurst’s day of giving
City employees are getting ready to pick up their paint brushes, hammers and weedeaters to help homeowners who are unable to help themselves.
Hurst is now accepting applications from people who need help with things such as tree trimming, landscaping and painting but who can’t afford or are unable to make the repairs.
People who want to apply for help on the Employee Giving Day must meet income guidelines. Applications are available on the city’s website, www.hursttx.gov, or at City Hall, 1505 Precinct Line Road.
Michelle Lazo, director of development and planning said the special work day, scheduled for April 17, is a chance for Hurst employees to give back to the community.
“We always hear good stories and meet lots of good people,” she said. “I’m amazed at how happy we make people with just a coat of paint.”
Some residents who apply for help with repairing their homes are veterans while others were teachers who taught employees when they were in school.
Lazo said the city typically selects four to five homes per year for repairs.
Hurst’s employee giving day began in 1999, and in 2010, the city formed a partnership with the Bedford-based nonprofit 6Stones, which will provide paint and other materials to the employees.
The day of giving coincides with the 6Stones Community Powered Revitalization program spring blitz, which is April 17-18, and volunteers from 6Stones will also be repairing homes in Hurst.
The 6Stones spring blitz will also take place in Bedford, Euless, Watauga and Richland Hills, and applications are available on the cities’ websites.
