Bell’s Gordon ‘had no idea’ she was setting school record
Hurst L.D. Bell forward Lexi Gordon continues to amaze in her sophomore season after dropping a program-record 47 points against Haltom on Feb. 10.
She also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. Gordon did well from the floor, going 8-of-17, including 5-of-8 from downtown and 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.
“After the first couple baskets, I was just feeling it and having fun on the court,” Gordon said. “Everything was just kind of working. I felt like I was about to have a heck of a game – just a player’s feeling you sometimes get.”
Gordon would help the Raiders win 63-52 after she scored 13 points in the opening quarter, 24 in the first half and had 32 points after three.
“My preparation has helped make me successful. I stay after every practice and make 50 free throws and 10 three-pointers from five different spots,” she said. “My teammates were getting me the ball when I was open so that was big. I can honestly say I left everything I had on the court at the end of the game.”
She didn't realize how many points she was scoring until the announcer called it out after the game and the players walking off the court.
“I knew I had scored a lot, but I had no idea it was 47 points. I was very surprised,” Gordon said.
Gordon didn't have a great day off the court, but used basketball to get away.
“Off the court, Tuesday wasn't a good day, but basketball has always been a kind of escape. I knew when I stepped on the court for the game, nothing else mattered but my team. Getting a win and finishing district play strong,” she said.
The Raiders (17-14) will take on state-ranked Duncanville in the bi-district round Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Arlington Martin High School. The Raiders are in the postseason for the fourth-straight year and have a tough task in front of them if they want to duplicate last season's regional final success.
“I'm stronger now and capable of handling a lot on and off the court. I'm so blessed to have the opportunity to play the game I love and won't waste any opportunity I'm given,” Gordon said. I know we have a big challenge in Duncanville.”
“They're a great program, but I'm confident we won't back down and I know I will give 100 percent and leave the court knowing I gave the best effort I have,” she added.
Gordon leads all area teams in scoring with 22.3 points per game (713 points total), adding 7.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals while shooting 66 percent from the floor.
