Mabank fire chief hit and killed by truck while directing traffic for rodeo

The city of Mabank’s fire chief was struck and killed Saturday night while directing traffic for a rodeo, authorities said.

Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol troopers were contacted about 10:30 p.m. to assist at the scene of the fatal crash.

Mabank Fire Chief Charles Woodard, who also served as a police officer, was standing on U.S. Business 175 directing traffic near the rodeo grounds when he stepped into the westbound lane and was hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Woodard was taken to a local medical facility, where he died.

The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.

“TMPA joins the Mabank community, his family, loved ones, fellow officers, firefighters, and all who served beside him in mourning this heartbreaking loss,” the Texas Municipal Police Association said in a statement.

DPS said its investigation remains active.
