A Grapevine elementary school student was bitten by a snake during a class field trip to Parr Park on Tuesday, school officials told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV.

The child’s parents were contacted and took the child to receive medical treatment, said Alishia Ilic, the principal of Grapevine-Colleyville ISD’s Glenhope Elementary School.

The student’s name and condition were not released, and the type of snake that bit the child is unknown.

After the fourth-grader was bitten, teachers and staff decided to end the field trip and return the students to campus, according to WFAA. Ilic acknowledged that the scene may have been frightening for children who witnessed it, and said counseling staff are meeting with students to provide support.
