Man who assaulted woman is fatally shot by Grand Prairie officer, police say
An armed man who had assaulted his girlfriend was shot and killed by a Grand Prairie officer Sunday, police said.
Grand Prairie police received a 911 call about 1 a.m. from a woman who was screaming while she was riding in a car headed west on Interstate 30 from Dallas, police said in a news release.
The woman told police that her intoxicated boyfriend, who was driving, had a handgun and was assaulting her, police said.
The vehicle was found exiting I-30 at Belt Line Road, where it stopped in a gas station parking lot. The woman got out of the passenger side as an officer ran to the vehicle to ensure her safety, police said.
Officers told the man several times to show his hands, but he refused and began reaching back inside the vehicle, police said.
The officer then shot the man, while “fearing for his life” and the life of the woman, police said in the release.
Officers provided medical care to the man, who was taken to a hospital for treatment. He died at the hospital, police said.
A loaded handgun was found in the area where the man had been reaching inside the vehicle, police said.
The woman injured in the assault was treated and released by medical personnel.
Witnesses told investigators that the man had been firing the handgun out of the vehicle’s window before encountering the officers, police said.
The dead man’s name will be released by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office after his family has been notified.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer‐Involved Shooting Team responded to the scene and will conduct an independent investigation as per the departmental policy. The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will be conducting a concurrent administrative investigation, according to the release.
