A kayaker was killed in a hit-and-run crash with a jet ski on Grapevine Lake on Sunday, authorities said.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman who died as 18-year-old Ava Renee Moore.
Police are searching for the woman who was operating the jet ski, and they released a photo of the suspect on Monday. She left the scene after hitting Moore, authorities said.
A passenger who was riding on the jet ski stayed at the scene to be interviewed by first responders, but the driver fled with a man in a car, according to a news release from Grapevine police and Texas Parks and Wildlife. While driving away, they hit another vehicle, police said.
Grapevine firefighters, police and Texas game wardens were called to the lake near Oak Grove Park about 5:20 p.m.
First responders pulled the kayaker out of the water and attempted live-saving measures. Moore had head injuries and died after being taken to the emergency room at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, authorities said.
Moore was a 2024 graduate of Timber Creek High School in Keller ISD and then committed to play basketball as a student at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School, according to her social media.
“We are grieving the loss of our daughter at this time,” Moore’s father said in a statement to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV. “Our prayers are also with the young ladies involved, along with their families.”
Texas game wardens are leading the investigation of Moore’s death, while Grapevine police are investigating the subsequent hit-and-run car crash.
