Texas game warden rescues 10 UNT students stranded on Lake Ray Roberts
A Texas game warden rescued 10 UNT students whose paddle boards and canoes were blown off course by dangerous wind conditions on Lake Ray Roberts over the weekend, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The Cooke County warden responded Saturday to a 911 call after the group of University of North Texas students became stranded on the water, the Parks and Wildlife Department said in a news release.
The college students drifted toward the center of the lake when they lost control after launching two canoes and five paddle boards amid strong winds. “Clinging to paddle boards and panicked, they called 911,” parks department officials said.
The warden and paramedics used a boat to find the students and rescue them.
“All were safely brought to shore — one was transported to a local hospital for hypothermia,” the release states. “We are thankful for this outcome, but it could have ended very differently. Always check the weather, wear a life jacket and understand your limits on the water.”
“Game wardens would like to thank the fisherman who helped pull students out of the water and our Texas State Park Police, Cooke County EMS and Denton County Dispatch partners,” the release said. “This happy ending likely wouldn’t have been possible without them.”
