2 people shot near Crowley district elementary school; campus closes to students
Two people were shot early Monday near J.A. Hargrave Elementary in Tarrant County, and a gun was found in a field on the Crowley school district campus, authorities said.
Deputies found one victim on North Crowley Cleburne Road outside the school and another at a residence nearby. They were taken to hospitals and are expected to survive, said Robbie Hoy, a Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.
Authorities did not announce an arrest.
The people were shot about 4:30 a.m. Hoy declined to say if the victims are adults or children, or are male or female.
The discovery of the gun prompted the school to be closed to students for the day while the campus was searched to confirm there were no other weapons there.
The sheriff’s office does not believe there is additional concern to the community, Hoy said on Monday evening.
District employees were on Monday told to report as normal to the school, at 9200 Poynter St. south of Fort Worth.
Crowley ISD officials said that classes will resume Tuesday at Hargrave Elementary.
STAAR testing for the school’s third- through fifth-grade students will be postponed until Wednesday, April 16.
“Thank you all for your flexibility during Monday’s unexpected school closure,” district officials wrote in the statement. “While there was no threat to our campus, law enforcement requested the campus be closed so that they could investigate an off-campus incident that occurred overnight on N. Crowley Cleburne Rd. that runs by our campus. The road is reopening today, which will allow us to safely return to school Tuesday.”
