One person and a dog were killed after their car caught fire in a parking lot in Cedar Hill on Tuesday night, Feb. 18, police said.

Around 7:40 p.m. officers responded to fire in a parking lot at the intersection of East Beltline Road and Joe Wilson Road, Cedar Hill police said in a Facebook post.

When officers arrived, they found smoke coming from the car. A man who was coming out of a store told officers that his friend and dog were in the car, police said.

The Cedar Hill Fire Department was able to put the fire out, but the occupant and dog did not survive, police said.

The person who died has not been identified by police.

Police said they are investigating what led to the fire.
