A man’s body was recovered from Eagle Mountain Lake on Monday morning after a search, according to his family and officials with the Tarrant Regional Water District.

Jorge Brana, the man’s brother, identified him as 37-year-old Walter Wek, and said that they had been swimming in the lake on Saturday night when Wek was pulled into a current and drowned.

He said that previous reports that the boat Wek had been on was disabled are inaccurate, and that the boat was functioning just fine.

Brana said he considers himself a strong swimmer and he nearly drowned in the current along with his brother.

Law enforcement from the Tarrant Regional Water District and Texas Parks and Wildlife conducted a search, but it was Brana and his daughter who found Wek’s body in the lake, he said.

Wek was an avid swimmer who loved to fish and spent a lot of time at Eagle Mountain Lake, but had never been to that specific area of the lake until the day that he drowned, his brother said.

Brana wants the narrative around his brother’s death to shift to urging others to take caution in that area, which is near Pelican Bay.

“People who lived at Eagle Mountain their whole lives were like, ‘Oh, y’all gotta stay away from that area because something was there before they built that lake and it sucks you in,’” Brana said.
