It was 106 degrees Monday, but that still isn’t the hottest day on record in North Texas
North Texas recorded its hottest day of the year on Monday, with many more 100-degree days expected later this week.
The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office recorded 106 degrees Monday, the hottest temperature this summer. July 12 was the previous hottest day of the year, with the temperature topping out at 105 degrees.
North Texas won’t see much relief, with the forecast calling for a high of 105 degrees on Tuesday, 104 on Wednesday and 103 on Thursday. An excessive heat warning is in place for most of North Texas, according to the NWS.
It’s the dog days of summer for North Texas. Here’s how this week’s temperatures compare to previous years.
Is 106 degrees the hottest temperature ever recorded in North Texas?
Nope, that would be 113 degrees back in June 1980.
While 106 degrees is a significant high for North Texas, its a drop in the bucket compared to previous temperatures. Here are the five hottest temperatures ever recorded in North Texas:
- 113 degrees- June 26 and 27, 1980
- 112 degrees- Aug. 18, 1909; Aug. 11, 1936 and June 28, 1980
- 111 degrees- Sept. 4, 2000
- 110 degrees- Aug. 10, 1936; Aug. 16, 1943; July 2 and 18, 1980; July 12, 1998 and Aug. 2, 2011
- 109 degrees- July 29, 1912; July 25, 1954; July 1, 3 and 17, 1980; Aug. 6, 2003; Aug. 3, 2011 and July 18-20, 2022
North Texas will need to record a temperature just a few degrees higher to crack the top five hottest days of the year.
How does this year’s summer compare to 2022?
At this time last year, North Texas had recorded 22 days at triple digits. We have so far seen only 11 100-degree days this year.
The first 100-degree day in 2022 came on June 11. This year, we saw our first 100-degree day on June 27. Last June, there were nine days over triple digits, compared to only five this year.
The summer 0f 2022 definitely got a much hotter start than this year. The month of July 2022 recorded 27 days over 100 degrees — with the hottest days at 109 degrees recorded July 18-20.
The heatwave continued into August recording another 11 days of triple digit temperatures. North Texas would record a total of 47 100-degree days, which is good for sixth all-time on the NWS’ list.
