Denton police investigate two-car crash that killed woman, critically injured child
The Denton Police Department is investigating a crash involving two vehicles in which a woman died and a child was critically injured.
At 7:33 p.m. Wednesday, Denton police and fire crews responded to a major crash involving a pickup truck and a sedan in the 8400 block of West University Drive near Cottonwood Lane.
Both vehicles were traveling westbound when the pickup truck hit the sedan, causing the car to hit a power pole, according to the preliminary investigation. The pickup truck had moderate front-end damage, while the sedan had severe damage from being rear-ended.
Fire crews transported all three passengers — including the driver — who were in the sedan to a local hospital. A 28-year-old woman passenger who was in the sedan was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.
A 10-year-old with critical injuries was transported to a regional hospital by air ambulance. A 62-year-old woman who was driving the sedan suffered minor to moderate injuries.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 28-year-old woman as Patricia Tovar Castro of Denton.
The man who was driving the pickup truck was not injured, police said in a news release.
Traffic investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. Intoxication is not suspected on the part of either driver, according to police.
The westbound lanes of West University Drive were closed for about four hours while first responders worked the crash.
This accident marks the sixth fatal crash this year in Denton.
