An Arlington officer fired upon a man on Sunday during a traffic stop, but he was not struck by the gunfire, police said.

Two officers stopped a vehicle about 2:45 p.m. near Carter and Skylark drives because it was flagged for having a felony warrant connected to it, Arlington police said.

As the driver pulled over, a passenger, Esteban Morales, left the vehicle holding a gun, police said. The sequence of events that occurred between when Morales, 26, left the vehicle and when one of the officers fired upon him were under investigation, police said.

Police do not believe Morales fired at the officers.

Morales was arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

The felony warrant is for a person who was not in the vehicle at the time, police said.

The officer who fired, who has been employed for five years by the department, was placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure, police said.
