A retired Haltom City police officer died Sunday morning in a fire at his home in Azle, Haltom City police said.

Authorities identified the officer as 62-year-old Cpl. Tony Miller, who retired after 25 years with the department.

Miller died at about 10 a.m. Sunday, but no other Information on the fire was immediately available Monday.

“It is difficult to put into perspective the contributions this man made to our department and community during his long career,” Haltom City police said in a Sunday post on the department’s Facebook page.

Miller started his career as a patrol officer and was later assigned to the criminal investigations division as a detective. He was promoted to the rank of corporal and was assigned to numerous specialized units including street crimes, which is an extension of the criminal investigation division, SWAT, SWAT sniper, and instructed the department for many years as a firearms instructor., according to Haltom City police.

“Tony was an expert marksman, competition shooter and loved all things related to firearms,” the department said.

Police said that after Miller retired as an officer, he went back to the department and became a property technician.

“His smile, laughter and wealth of knowledge will not soon be forgotten,” the department posted. “We ask the citizens of Haltom (City) to pray for Tony’s family, loved ones and fellow officers as they mourn this devastating loss.”
