Tarrant County confirms first West Nile Virus positive mosquito sample of 2022
Tarrant County has confirmed its first West Nile Virus positive mosquito sample of 2022, collected in Bedford, Tarrant County Public Health announced Wednesday in a news release.
West Nile Virus season typically runs from April to mid-November. According to Tarrant County Public Health, the first positive mosquito sample in 2021 was found on April 21.
West Nile Virus is most commonly transmitted by a mosquito bite. About one in every five people infected with West Nile Virus develop a fever and other symptoms, according to the CDC, and about one in every 150 people infected develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.
The best ways to prevent the spread of West Nile include keeping vegetation trimmed and dumping standing water, according to Tarrant County Public Health.
You can also protect yourself by wearing long sleeves and long pants and wearing EPA-approved insect repellent.
