Texas COVID-19 patient in critical care marries fiance: ‘We just want to be together’
While battling COVID-19 since September, 70-year-old Alvarado resident Donna Fulton has had a lot of time to think— mostly about what could have been with her fiance, Eric Wood, who she met in February.
“We just want to be together and get married,” she said in a statement. “We feel like we’ve put it off long enough.”
The couple were engaged on their six-month anniversary and recently bought a house in Alvarado with plans for a small wedding there.
After being admitted to the critical care unit at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth on Oct. 6, Donna decided to have the wedding at the hospital’s chapel instead and on Saturday married Wood, 62.
Media Relations Strategist Amanda Uffman said nurses and hospital staff helped make the wedding day one the couple will never forget, with a wedding cake baked by the hospital’s cafeteria and nutrition services staff. Staff also decorated the cake table and a walker to have on hand as needed during the ceremony, she said.
After the ceremony, Uffman said they went to the hospital’s meditation garden for their wedding reception — the first time Donna had been outdoors in a month.
“I honestly don’t feel like I’d be here today if my family and friends weren’t my prayer warriors, because I’ve got a lot of people praying for me,” Donna said.
