Investigation finds no crime was committed in Hurst Target attempted kidnapping case
Hurst police have determined that no crime occurred when a woman inadvertently walked off with a shopping cart holding a couple’s infant daughter at Target on Tuesday.
A man initially identified as a person of interest and a woman who was called a suspect in the case both contacted police on Wednesday and were cooperative with the investigation, police said. Photos of the man and woman were released in an attempt to have the public’s help in identifying the two, according to authorities.
The woman who was identified as a suspect told investigators that she was “completely unaware she had taken possession of the wrong shopping cart with the child,” and investigators found no criminal intent was present during the incident, a news release from the Hurst Police Department said Thursday.
Investigators determined that a man who was identified as a person of interest had no involvement and just happened to be in the same area. He was seen several times near the woman who eventually walked away with the shopping cart that contained the 1-year-old girl.
No names are being released because of privacy concerns, the release said. No criminal charges will be filed, police said.
Police responded about 3 p.m. Tuesday to the Target store located at 1400 Precinct Line Road to investigate the report of the attempted kidnapping of a 1-year-old girl that occurred as her parents shopped.
The child was in a baby carrier in the shopping cart, Hurst police said.
Store employees were told of the missing child and began to search for her. The child was found inside the store about four minutes later.
The woman abandoned the shopping cart and left the store before she could be found. She later contacted the police department Wednesday and was cooperating with detectives, police said.
The couple was reunited with their child, who was not injured, soon after the child was reported missing.
