Looking for a new friend? Pet adoptions fees now waived at Fort Worth event.

Hundreds of animals found their homes at Fort Worth’s Mega Adoption event over the weekend.

The Fort Worth Animal Care and Control and the Humane Society of North Texas held the event Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Will Rogers Center. The event was the second of its kind this year, the first being in June.

About 600 cats, dogs and assorted creatures had been adopted by Sunday, said Cassie Lackey, Director of Communications at the Humane Society of North Texas.

“In essence, when you adopt, you are saving two lives,” Lackey said. “You’re saving the life of the pet, and you’re saving the life of the pet coming into the shelter because of an open kennel.”

All adoptions were $10 for the event. Starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, adoption fees were waived.

Lackey said the shelters have been at capacity for months. Due to warm weather, cats and dogs breed almost year round in Texas.

Hundreds of animals were transported to the Will Rogers Center on Friday, including iguanas, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.

More than 650 animals had found homes as of 3 p.m. Sunday, Lackey said, including about 200 cats and about 400 dogs.

Caden Cole, 7, took home two guinea pigs, aptly named Guinea and Pig. He said his previous two guinea pigs had died.

Morris Holdahl was searching for a young cat Sunday. After searching dozens of cages, a small black cat named Boo chose him when she snuggled into the crook of his elbow.
