A Mesquite police officer assigned to a high school accidentally discharged his handgun while inspecting it.

The gun went off as the officer began to unload the gun in his office at Horn High School, according to a press release.

Only one round was fired from the gun and it did not hit anyone. The bullet ricocheted off the concrete floor and disintegrated.

The gun fired when the officer failed to eject the round of ammunition from the gun’s chamber after removing its magazine, the press release said.

No students or teachers were present in the area where the gun went off, the release said.

A Mesquite school district spokeswoman said the school was not placed on lock-down, and this was the first time something of this nature had happened in one the district’s schools that she was aware of.

The department is investigating the incident and the officer will be subject to internal discipline.
