Armed robber who exchanged gunfire with Arlington police arrested; 1 suspect on the run
A 37-year-old man is in custody after exchanging gunfire with Arlington police officers during an armed robbery Friday night, but police are still searching for another suspect, authorities said.
Officers responded to a CashMax title loan business in a strip mall in the 600 block of W. Pioneer Parkway around 6:45 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, regarding an armed robbery in progress call. A 911 caller reported seeing two men who were possibly armed enter the business, police said in a news release.
One of the suspects left the building and took off running. The second suspect displayed a weapon and began firing from the back door of CashMax, according to police. Two officers then fired their service weapons several times in the direction of the armed suspect.
The armed man went back inside and later tried to leave the business by the front door. Officers posted in front of the building took him into custody without further incident, according to police.
A Fort Worth police helicopter helped Friday with the manhunt for the second suspect, according to scanner radio reports. He had not been apprehended as of Tuesday, Jan. 14, police said.
The suspect who exchanged gunfire with officers wasn’t injured in the shooting, police said, and no officers were injured either.
The CashMax employees were safely removed from the business and were unharmed. Their legs and hands had been bound with tape during the robbery, according to police.
At a news conference on Monday, Arlington police Lt. Courtney White said the employees were “shaken up” but were not injured.
The suspect in custody, Kelvin Bivens, faces one count of aggravated assault against a public servant and one count of aggravated robbery. He was in the Tarrant County Jail on Tuesday with bond set at $500,000. Bivens also was wanted on a robbery warrant out of Shreveport, Louisiana, authorities said.
Police have not released the name or a description of the other man who they are searching for. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Arlington Police Department.
The location of the robbery was about four miles from AT&T Stadium, where crowds gathered Friday night to watch the Cotton Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal game between Texas and Ohio State.
Both officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The department’s Homicide Unit will lead a criminal investigation into the incident and the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative investigation. The investigations are standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting, the release states.
The Texas Municipal Police Association said in a social media post that it sent an attorney to provide support to members of the Arlington Police Department following the officer-involved shooting, which is a standard practice for the officers’ association.
