One person was killed after their vehicle caught fire early Jan. 4 on Interstate 20, Arlington police said.

Officers responded to the eastbound lanes of I-20 near South Cooper Street shortly after 2 a.m. They found a 2024 Hyundai Elantra that was already engulfed in flames, police said in a news release.

Investigators believe the Elantra was speeding and plowed into the back of an 18-wheeler, the release states. The impact caused the car to catch fire. The Hyundai’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor in the deadly crash.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner will identify the victim. The driver of the 18-wheeler wasn’t injured, according to the release.
