‘Goat wranglers’: Police round up herd of goats frolicking in north Arlington neighborhood

A large herd of goats that escaped from a park Tuesday morning and went for a walk in a north Arlington neighborhood are all safe and accounted for, police said.

The goats are being housed at the Crystal Canyon Natural Area to clear invasive plants and underbrush from the area. Around 7:30 a.m., someone reported that several of the animals had escaped their enclosure, Arlington police said in a news release.

Officers blocked off a portion of Brown Boulevard and helped the keepers round up the livestock from the surrounding neighborhood. The goats are safely back in their enclosure, police said.

Footage from a responding officer’s body-camera shows the herd running across a street, which is blocked off by Arlington police vehicles.

“Go, goats, go! Back to where you came from, please,” an officer can be heard saying in the video. “Who knew we were goat wranglers now?”

Officers followed as the goats trotted across a lawn and into another road. The goats start to scatter, and an officer claps his hands and tells them to keep moving. A few stragglers come running up from behind to join the group.

Open Space Development, in partnership with the city, recently brought hundreds of goats to the area around Crystal Canyon Natural Area in an effort to reduce fire danger and clear waterways, police said.
