79-year-old Arlington woman killed after being hit by truck at Arlington intersection

A 79-year-old Arlington woman who was just blocks from her home was killed Tuesday morning after being hit by a pickup truck at an intersection, Arlington police said.

The woman was identified as Mercedes Chaparro of Arlington, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. A ruling on her death is pending.

The fatal accident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on West Turner Warnell Road in south Arlington.

Chaparro lived just a few blocks from the accident scene, according to the medical examiner’s website on Tuesday.

Investigators believe the woman was crossing Turner Warnell Road when a Ford F-150, which was traveling eastbound, hit and killed her.

The driver of the pickup driver stopped at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation, Arlington police said.

No criminal charges have been filed, police said, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

Investigators have not ruled the possibility that the pedestrian failed to yield to oncoming traffic when she entered the street.
