Arlington man suspected of murdering student found after search by authorities
An intense search was on Monday for a 22-year-old man accused of running over and killing an Arlington Sam Houston High School student last week near a school.
Arlington police released a photo and the name of the suspect, Keshawn Sims, on Monday in hopes that someone has information on his whereabouts.
At about 8 p.m., Arlington police said Keshawn Sims turned himself into law enforcement and was in custody.
In a warrant for his arrest, Sims is accused of the murder of 17-year-old Knoah Harlan.
Agents with the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force are assisting Arlington police with the search for Sims.
Harlan was killed as he was running to escape an oncoming vehicle, Arlington police said.
On July 27 at 2:27 p.m., police responded to the 2100 block of Highbank Drive to reports of a crash. They found a teenager who had been hit by a car, and that the car had fled the scene. The teenager, later identified as Harlan, was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Detectives believe that groups of people in two cars had agreed to meet near Bowie High School to fight. The first car had about five people in it, police said. The second car, a sedan, arrived and started to drive recklessly on the road in front of the school.
The sedan started accelerating toward the car that had five people inside. The people began to jump out of the car to run away, and the person driving the sedan swerved and hit Harlan as he fled, police said.
Arlington detectives said Monday that they believe Sims was the man driving the sedan.
About 100 people gathered Friday night on Highbank Drive across from Bowie High School in Arlington with balloons and candles to remember Harlan.
“He was a protector,” said his mother, Kandance Harlan, at the memorial. “He taught the kids how to appreciate,” she said.
Harlan was to be a senior at Sam Houston High School in the fall.
